Our campsite near Sarlat
Planning a holiday in the Dordogne? The campsite Le Rocher de la Cave boasts two main assets: it is just 15 minutes from the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda and it is located right on the banks of the Dordogne River. Perfect for a getaway amidst nature and history, with your feet in the water and your head in the clouds!
Getting to Sarlat from our campsite
Le Rocher de la Cave is just 10 km from the centre of Sarlat. By car, reaching the town takes approximately 15 minutes.
To breathe in the fresh air of the Périgord Noir, opt for cycling. Built on an old railway, the Dordogne Valley Greenway passes through Carsac-Aillac and joins Sarlat, cutting through woods and fields. Reserved for non-motorised vehicles, it is safe and perfectly suited for going on family outings. The shaded path shields you from the summer sun, which can be merciless at times. Bridges and rock formations dotted along the route add a picturesque touch to the trip. To reach Sarlat, it takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour. And if you haven’t brought your bikes on holiday with you, a bike hire service is available near the campsite.
Finally, the 335 bus connects the Souillac and Sarlat-la-Canéda bus stations. This bus runs 3 times per day: in the morning, at noon and at the end of the afternoon. From the Carsac post office to the Place Pasteur square in Sarlat, the journey takes less than 30 minutes.
Accommodation options at our 3-star campsite
For a traditional, comfortable stay, choose one of our mobile homes. With 1, 2, 3 or even 4 bedrooms, these holiday rentals can accommodate a variety of guests, from couples without children to large families and groups of friends.
Prefer glamping? Our glamping options will add a touch of originality to your holiday. From a wooden mountain chalet-style cabin to the Jungle lodge for a hint of adventure, or the Woody tent for an “Out of Africa” experience, the choice is yours. These lodgings are perfect for those looking to combine comfort with being close nature.
Offering a delightful middle ground between a tent and a mobile home is the canvas bungalow. This type of accommodation has all the advantages of the tent, without the disadvantages such as setting it up and taking it down. You’ll sleep in a comfortable bed whilst staying connected with nature. And you don’t need to bring all your kitchen equipment.
Finally, Le Rocher de la Cave offers camping pitches. The campsite’s most shady area provides an ideal spot to pitch your tent and string up your hammock between two trees. Our luckiest guests can even enjoy a view of the Dordogne from their tent.
Having fun at our 3-star campsite
A campsite with a heated swimming pool
What kind of campsite would we be without the star of all campsites? Of course, we’re talking about the pool! At Le Rocher de la Cave, the pool is open from the beginning of the season (in May). And of course, it’s heated. For children, the favourite spot is the water play area.
Eat, drink, and have fun at the campsite
Our bar-restaurant is located right on the water’s edge. Sip your drink with the Dordogne River as your soundtrack. Try our renowned pizzas, or some typical Périgord Noir dishes.
To liven-up your holiday, the campsite also organises evening concerts in the restaurant during the high season. Between dance moves, enjoy the mussels and fries on the menu especially for this occasion.
Embark on a canoeing adventure from the campsite.
Even if you’re not a sports enthusiast, there’s one activity in the Dordogne that you won’t be able to resist: canoeing. The winding river connects some of the villages of the Périgord Noir, offering breathtaking scenery. No need for a guide to glide along the water. The castles along the river will watch over you as the light current of the Dordogne takes you peacefully on a beautiful adventure.
Whether you’re a family, a couple, or a group of friends, Le Rocher de la Cave campsite offers canoe hire so you can embark on a freshwater adventure. Leave from the campsite beach and return by minibus.
Discover Sarlat-la-Canéda, the medieval town of Périgord Noir
Events in Sarlat between May and September
From spring onwards, the town pulsates to the rhythm of cultural and gastronomic events. Between July and August, you’ll find the immensely popular Theatre Games Festival. An event that has been held in Sarlat for over 70 years.
Every two years, the town also organises the Ringueta: the festival of traditional games. Children and adults alike can try the games of yesteryears whilst enjoying the Périgord Noir gastronomy.
And speaking of gastronomy: Every May, the Journées du Terroir de Sarlat returns. A particularly gourmet event during which your taste buds will discover what Périgord Noir does best. Foie gras, truffles, cheeses… Many of these delicacies, which are the pride of France around the world, come straight from the Périgord. And they’re even better when they’re local.
Must-do activities
Personal preferences aside, certain activities should definitely be on your to-do list during your stay:
- Sarlat market: it is one of the largest in the Aquitaine region, and certainly the best (in our very subjective opinion). It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday.
- Panoramic viewpoint from the former Sainte-Marie Church: a panoramic lift takes you up to the bell tower, where you can admire the town from above.
- Puymartin Castle: in the Dordogne, there is no shortage of castles. But this one is quite peculiar. It is said to be haunted… by the famous White Lady.
- Manoir de Gisson: in the heart of the old town, this monument immerses visitors into Sarlat’s past, and more precisely into 17th century bourgeois life.
